    New User Questions and Answers

There are a number of questions that arise on a near to daily basis in the "Contact the Moderators' email box. We are always glad to aid new users, but must do so within the confines of our system.

I'm a new user. Why can't I see my post?

You've just joined the forum. Your posts must be reviewed and approved by a moderator.

    Why is that?

Its our main way of screening for spamm advertising. In the moderator que, we read a lot of those advertisments for everything from the newest fashions to the best mail order brides. We delete the ads and the users who posted them. While some may find the subjects interesting, we are here to talk about the Civil War.

But I'm the Grand High Poobah of the 43rd NorthWest Southern Kentucky Fencibles and Mess Kit Repair Battallion. You know me. I should be able to post right off. Do something.

No, sorry. This is old software. We don't have the means to override it on an individual basis.

Well, you are being too slow. I've made 8 posts in the last hour and none of them show up.

The moderators are volunteers. They have other tasks, including going to work, going to events, and being with their families. You can expect new user posts to appear within 24-36 hours unless everybody is gone to a reenactment. That happens occassionally.

I just joined to sell off gear. Why don't my posts appear?

We are primarily a discussion forum. We are glad to provide a venue for sales, but we suggest you take some time to contribute intellectually to the discussion. Give people time to know you. As moderators, we've discovered that our most problematic sales transactions come from people who are not known in the community. Some high value items change hands here. We like that to be good experience for all concerned.

Once you have participated in discussions here for awhile, the title under your username will change from "Junior Member" to "Registered User". Then you can use the classifieds. Be sure to read the rules at the top of that subforum.

But I'm new to the hobby and the forum and I need some stuff right now. Why can't I post a Wanted to Buy in the Classifieds?

We don't have a good work around for that problem, other than for you to participate actively in discussions. In the meantime--read a lot, ask questions as needed, and build the knowledge you need so you won't make a poor choice in buying gear.

When will I be able to see my posts?

I posted my first post a few days ago. When will I be able to see my first post? I feel I can bring subjects of interest to the forum.

Any posts made by New/Junior members must be approved by a Moderator.

We attempt to do that within 24 hours, but things do get dicey around holidays and major events.

How long does it take to be able to post in the B/s/t?

I see the question about "not being able to post in the Classifieds."

Is posting elsewhere a must before one can post there?
If not, how long should I have to wait until I am approved (or in general how long must I wait to be able to post-- says I'm waiting approval by a mod to be accepted into the forum(?))

Yes, it's a must to post elsewhere and contribute to the discussion life of the forum in a consistent manner. It may take awhile for your posts to appear, as they must be read and approved by a moderator.

If you have joined only for the purpose of selling, FaceBook's Group 'The Trade Blanket' is an excellent venue for that purpose.

    Mmmm, no. You haven't.

Look under your User Name. It says 'Registered User'. You have full access.

How to contact an official on this forum

I have had an account on this web site for at least a couple of years. Forgot my password and can find no way to reset it. The email I opened the account with is no longer active. I have a 35 star civil war flag to sell and find I can't post using the new account I set up.

Just sold an A frame tent on this web site. here is the link to the ad:

I would also like to send in some money from the tent sale but don't know how to do that either.

Here's the reply I sent you as I worked the 'Contact the Moderators' email box this morning'

    . Dear Mr Waddell,

Unfortunately there is not a way for me to solve your several challenges.

If you had the same email you registered under, I could send you a password reset to that address and you'd be able to get in.

As it is, you'll need to either remember the old password, or register again. The restriction on posting sales by junior members is built in to the software as part of our spamm protection and I have no way to lift it on an individual basis.

Sometimes folks don't get our replies from that system because their spam filters are set very high. More than half the replies I send bounce back to me for that reason. The same thing happens with password resets--we send them, and they end up in spam bins. Folks think we are ignoring their problem.

And then of course, there is the spam itself--I deleted over 100 spam messages in the ask the moderators email account this morning to get to two folks who actually had real forum question. Because we can't set a spam filter there and be able to see all of you.

And Friends, the Big Yellow Donate Button is at the Top Middle of the Forum page.

I'm going to go unpack my van so I can pack my van so I can talk to all the nice little school children tomorrow. I need coffee.

Were some of my posts deleted or was it just some sort of glitch?
