RED GLASS/PEXI QUESTION
Posted by: deltafour ()

Is there a reason why using red ruby glass has to be small for your darkbox?

Seems like the larger the red glass the better you can see inside the darkbox

I notice people using red plexiglass (who sells it?) for their silver bath containers.

Is the plexi good enough to block the the light waves as well as red glass

Thank you

Carl

Yes, red plexi works fine. Get 1/4" though. I used to get it on ebay. Or just google red plexi. There are gobs of plastics suppliers online.

I use a fairly small piece of red glass in my darkbox (approx. 6 x 3 inches). I kept it small to minimize the chance of fogging; even at that size it allows in plenty of light (and I still never allow direct sunlight to hit that window). Painting the inside of the darkbox yellow also signficantly increased the brightness. In my darkroom I first covered the windows with red acetate. Granted, this was on the southern side of a building (meaning direct sunlight), but the red acetate lead to fogging of my plates. I replaced the glass with red glass (the same I use in my darkbox) which alleviated the issue.

My first darktent employed 3 12"x12" sheets of red acrylic on the side walls and a 12"x24" sheet in the ceiling. I had trouble with fogging in direct sunlight once but solved the problem by setting up in the shade or baffling the windows when needed. I've also used a red sensitizing tank without issue and have red acrylic over the windows of my RV. Never had a problem with either. Of course, red acrylic windows, tanks, and RVs ain't exactly period-correct.
