JAPANING PLATE QUESTION
Posted by: deltafour ()

In John's manual he uses Canadian Balsam Fir for the 2nd coat formula for the plates.

What is the reason for it?

I had sticker shock at how expensive it is for such a small botttle.

I was wondering if you can use something else in it's place or is it vital to the formula?

One more question.

On the plate varnish the formula calls for Gum Sandarac and Lavander Oil.

Do you also need these 2 items or is there another subsitute you can use?

Thanks

Carl

He uses it for 2nd coat due to price. It IS needed for second coat. He uses the minwax stuff for 1st coat since collodion doesn't come into contact with it.
I was just using the balsam for both coats.
For your question: other alternatives to take place of balsam react with collodion and mess up images.

It looks like and priced accordingly, but just order it from Mike at Artcraft. I'm sure other stuff on various herb sites may be just fine; just if you get it from Mike, you'll be sure and won't have to start second guessing if all goes haywire.
For example, much of the lavender oils that are sold online are not true 100% (even though they say it is) and will cause issues in varnish.
