    Talking Fiddle

Does anybody know any good brands or styles of fiddle that were common in the CW? I'm looking to find a good fiddle/violin that I can play around the campfire accompanied by a banjo and a few guitars.

The violin body hasn't really changed since the early 1800. I drag an old high school orchestra instrument around with me and it's always been adequate to the task. If you can find an old coffin case, they make a big impression. I got one in somewhat poor condition for $20 and restored it inexpensively. One thing you need to look for in this instrument is sturdiness. It's going to be played in and exposed to less than ideal conditions.

I second that. Don't bring a good $1500 violin to an overnight event.
