Field Commander’s Report
We expect a large company at Gettysburg with members of the Company C, 4th Infantry from Washington
State, several relatives of the Queen of England, a few pick-ups, and a new member who has recently
returned from European duty. Remember to call the NR hot line for company our assignment. All-in-all
we should have an excellent time.
Please remember to bring plenty of cartridges and caps, and water. We will be in the field all on Saturday, so prepare to eat out of your haversacks. The NR requests that you arrive on Thursday or before noon on Friday. We will be engaged in a battle on Friday afternoon. Camp
set-up will be bivouac style. Those who come early should not attempt to set up your tents until the quartermaster has laid out the area, or you will have to move them. Major Mongo will begin to set up camp on Wednesday afternoon.
Until then,
Capt. Don Rivera
Field Commander

Place: Carroll County Community College, Westminster, MD
Event: Recruiting Event
Info: This is a one-day event for both civilian and military members. The military will set up our
recruiting booth on the campus of the college. We would love to have several members man the recruiting
station while a small platoon sets up camp and does living history impressions and a little drill. We could
duplicate our successful effort of this past weekend at Gettysburg. Please let Jim Wassel, or me, know
whether or not you can attend. We are serious in our recruiting efforts and this will offer us an excellent
opportunity to recruit in that part of Maryland. The event has acquired some high powered sponsors which
include the Carroll County Office of Tourism, the Carroll County Times Newspaper, the Maryland
Humanities Council, and the college itself. There will be ample publicity through newspapers, television,
and radio as well as printed brochures and flyers. With the civilians of Sykes’ Regulars, we want to make
a good show of it. The event runs from 0930 hours until 1900 hours. For those coming from afar, we can
set up on the campus on Friday evening. Water and sanitary facilities will be available Friday and
Saturday.
Uniform: We need men in both uniforms, so if you do not have the nine-button frock coat, Hardee hat,
scales, dark blue trousers, and white gloves, wear the late war uniform. Of course, clean your weapons, and
polish your brass.

this popular event for the NPS. The event will need men to serve as wounded with more active roles than
the past. We are hoping to bring a compelling and more realistic portrayal of the aftermath at Gettysburg.
So come out and help us bring this story to life with the intensity and drama it deserves.

Updates and Information
This is the big one of the year folks. After all the rumor and scuttlebutt about this event it seems like it just
may come off. It seems to have been downscaled somewhat from the initial ten million that were supposed
to attend. I’m sure it will be fantastic if the organizers have common sense as well the reenactors. Common
sense demands paying attention to what your body is telling you in the heat. It obviously bears repeating. If
you feel dizzy or sick, drop out of the fight, find some shade and let your NCO’s know about it. Make sure
you have plenty of water.
Sykes’ Regulars are expecting some special guest Regulars from the west and from over the ocean. It seems
we will be fielding a 50 man company. Lets make them feel welcome and show them the pride we have in
representing the Regulars.
Master chef Pete Brooks and a host of favorites will be organizing a company mess. All you have to bring
is haversack lunches for as many days as you are attending. Saturday we will be in the field all day and will
be eating out of our haversacks. We may have some special eats for out in the field. But make sure you have
supplies. Breakfast and dinner will be available starting Friday. We will have a limited menu on Thursday for those arriving early.
If you arrive before Thursday wait to set up camp as the NR camp has to be laid out. (Wait for Mongo and
his big ball of twine) You may have to shifts your digs otherwise. He should have it set up by Wednesday evening.
Don’t forget to bring plenty of cartridges and caps. It’s going to be a showdown and we aren’t going to let
the Rebs breathe.
Some of us we’ll be there on Wednesday so come out early and watch all the other poor saps struggle their
way in. We should also do a little drill because we’ve been off for a whole month. (Can’t believe we were
off for so long)
The following is the most current info from the event organizers. (At least that I’ve been exposed to)
Arrival; best during daylight hours on Tuesday through Friday. Vehicles not allowed in camp after 0800
Friday. If you arrive later than 0800 Friday, walk into camp after registering. Cars allowed into camp after
Pickett's Charge on Sunday.
Camping at site is allowed for those who wish to remain until Monday. Emergency number; 717-338-9355.
No one under 16 allowed to carry a weapon. Anyone near the age of 16 must bring a photocopy of their
birth certificate as proof of age.
Military; camping will be under the trees, but the cutting of poles is forbidden. Bring your own poles.
Civilians; due to the large number of civilians coming to the event, organizers urge everyone that they can
only hold a large space open for a reasonable time.
Come early. Federal civilians have two choices. Those who wish to remain close to the federal camp should
be directed to the federal "refugee" camp, while those civilians who wish to be closer to the sutlers should
be directed to the "federal civilian camp". Civilians who wish to view the battles must proceed to those
areas at least one hour before the start of the activity.
All large RVs for reenactors and sutlers must be
placed in the "modern camping area" next to the tenting areas.
Water and port-o-johns will be provided. A $25.00 fee will be charged at the registration desk. Please call
Glenn LeBoeuf's 24-hour info line at 908-903-1064 and leave your name and number if you need to discuss
particulars. He promises to return your call within 24 hours.
Directions
>From the North; Take US 15 to the Steinwehr Avenue exit, make a right at
the end of the ramp and an immediate left onto Bull Frog Road. Make a right at Pumping Station Road,
and go about two miles to the red registration barn.

Road South, and make a left onto PA Rte. 116 towards Fairfield. After passing through Fairfield drive to
Camp Gettysburg Road, and turn right. Drive to Pumping Station Road, and make a left. The red
registration barn will be on
your left. There are to be "CW" signs on Camp Gettysburg and Pumping Station roads.

Sykes' Civilians
Dearest Friends,
I realize that you have not heard from the Civilian Unit much in the past few months, but, alas, I have been
busy and remiss in my duties. We have a couple of lovely events happening in July and August that the
Civilians would expressly implore the Regulars to attend with us, and give us the support of your friendship
and knowledge.
The first event will be on 18 July in Carroll County, Maryland. The College there is having a small event.
They would love for all of the Civilian Unit to come and help, but the military would be a nice touch. ( I
smell a recruiting opportunity!) Further details/questions should be directed to Nancy Schoppert at
nschoppert@carroll.cc.md.us or by phone during business hours at (410) 386-8191. There will be NO
registration fee, the water and firewood will be free. Flush toilets (!) will be available.
The second event will be our annual Fort Washington event which will be held on the first weekend of
August. This event is our chance to show that the Regulars can do more than shoot guns and speak about
battle strategy. The men of the Regulars were living breathing men, who had lives before and after the
Late Unpleasantness. The scenario that the National Park Service would like us to present during the day
Saturday is a Garrison Day. That evening will be doing a Coming Home 1865 presentation by torchlight.
Any questions can be directed to me at:
RMason3357@aol.com.
I hope to see you at the previous two events. I, myself, will be endeavoring to attend both and will enjoying
seeing you there.

A Proposal
A Journey to the Emerald Isle.
An idea has been floating around the campfire for a few months now that a vacation is in order for the lads
and lasses of Sykes’ Regulars. A band of Celtophiles in the group have been afflicted with a yearning for
green, green hills of Ireland. We sing so many Irish songs, it’s really no wonder. So we are making a
proposal that as a group, those interested in touring the land of Blarney make themselves known so that we
may ascertain whether a flight and accommodations may be had at hopefully a reduced rate. Several of our
band have been to this beautiful island already and hopefully can be talked into serving as tour guides. If
anyone has contacts in Ireland this would also be of great service. We may even be able to go in uniform if
we can find a host that would be interested in seeing some American Yankees of the Civil War.
This is in the planning stages and we are in hopes of making the trip in the coming year. If anyone is
interested please contact Jim Wassel, Jim Nickle or Janice Applegate. The more folks we get to go the more
fun we’ll have and the price will hopefully be reduced to a point that will not require a second mortgage.
Think about it.
Signed,
A Blue Leprechaun
The Regulars Unite!
As you may or may not have heard, there has been an effort to unite Regular units from all over the country
into a Regular Battalion to fight in the Wheatfield at the 135th Gettysburg. From all available information
it seems that this endeavor is going to bear fruit. The structure of the battalions has yet to be finalized but
come the day the Regulars will march against the foe in their largest numbers ever. Will Hutchison will
command the contingent of Regulars representing the NR.
The 96th PA will add their metal to our
company and all told our company should number over 100 men. An actual company size unit. We will be
cooperating with other companies of similar size.
To have the opportunity to march against the foe as Regulars all is an just a mind boggling concept. As
Regulars we maintain a standard of professionalism that is our pride and to put a force together that could
be possibly 600 strong with the same standard will be one of the highest highs in our reenacting lives. If
you are a Regular you can’t miss this. Our marching into that final field of glory and “moving off in
admirable style, with well aligned ranks, facing about from time to time to deliver well-aimed fire and
check pursuit”, will be the representation of the pinnacle of the Regulars career. The final march through
the Valley of Death. The Regulars were never the same after that march. Don’t Miss It!
