Below is an original U.S. knapsack
View of the outside of an open pack
Front of knapsack.  Visible are the three straps used to secure the pack closed.
The three smaller buckles are for fastening the front of the pack closed, and the two large buckles/hooks are for attaching the shoulder straps.
Leather loops for running the blanket roll straps through.
Shoulder straps sewn to back of pack with black thread.
Note the scalloped pattern at the end of the leather strap and the leather disk over the brass rivet.
The brass rivet is visible where the leather disc has come off.
