Jute cord use to secure the cork stopper to the side of  this reproduction canteen is similar to that which would have been seen on early war canteens.  Metal chains, as on the original below, where introduced later in the war.

The attachment of the metal chain at the neck of canteen is unusual as typically the chain would have been attached to the loop on the side of the canteen that the shoulder straps run though in a similar fashion as string on the repro canteen above.  This is likely a post war modifation1
Cork stopper and chain.  The use of the metal chain is usually an indication that the canteen is mid- to later issue.  Stoppers on canteens issued early war where attached with a cord make of jute or other similar material.
