Illumination, Antietam Nation Battlefield
December 2, 2006

Overview

Thousands of visitors come once a year on the first Saturday in December to drive through the park at night when over 23,000 candles are lit, each   representing a soldier who lost there life on the Antietam battlefield.   Watching the candles, as far as the eye can see, flickering in the night is a real touching and sobering spectacle to see.  A handful of Federal re-enactors are stationed at the Smoketown Road and at Bloody Lane are some confederates.

Last year Jim Reynolds and Bob Clayton helped to fill the ranks of the Federals and recommend it highly to those that have not participated before.  The reenactor coordinator for the event was Chris Anders and firewood is provided by the park.
