John had the dubious distinction of nearly being hit by a projectile during a reenactment in New Jersey. Fortunately for John, the tompion struck his drum and thus missing him by inches. Even though literally under fire, John continued in the event and exhibited the proud professionalism of the National Regiment performing as if nothing untoward had happened.

When John was not drumming for the regiment, he served with the 5th New York.
