Howard was the first adjutant of the National Regiment.
In this capacity, it was necessary for him to research the duties and responsibilities of an infantry adjutant in the 1860s, and incorporate this knowledge into an expanding hobby. As the National Regiment has from its inception, accuracy in the portrayal of the period 1860-1865 is paramount. This attitude is essential to the regiment remaining at the leading edge of this exciting hobby. Howard's contributions were instrumental in this.

When Howard was not representing the Colonel, he was with the 12th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry.
