What is this event?

As you can see from the introduction page the event breaks down into five essential elements, in this order.

1.)  We are all expected to raise a minimum of $100 for battlefield preservation. That is the most important concern.
2.)  Read and adhere to the authenticity guidelines.
3.) Participate in a higher quality, campaigner driven, semi-immersion experience for the participants on Saturday November 1, culminating with a short "battle" reenactment at noon Sunday, November 2, 2008.
4.) Conduct a public program on Saturday, November 1, interpreting the history in the Fall 1862 Battle of Unison.
5.) Socialize with friends and have a good time.

This will be far from a regular reenactment weekend. For starters all participants will camp campaign style. There will be no fixed camps, no sutlers, and a few select civilians due to the military nature of the event. We will be mobile and move roughly 8 miles on Saturday, and five miles on Sunday morning.
You must meet some basic criteria concerning authenticity. They will be several pages long with a bibliography.
Basically this event is designed to simply get a lot of decent-looking folks together and do something constructive, having a unique Civil War experience that will help save battlefields at the same time – and have a good time doing it. The idea is to make a memorable experience out of the weekend; so that on that long trip home you have a smile on your face --thinking that you did not waste your valuable time driving to Virginia.
It would be great to get out many "veterans" from the hobby that might be bored with reenacting. As we all know there are many quality living historians that have not come to a reenactment in a while because they are burned out on the monotony of a reenactment. We all understand that. That is the reality of a lot of this stuff - it becomes mundane most of the time. The events can be very boring. We want, so much, for this event to be different. We want those guys you haven't seen in a while to come out to this, because it is different. There are many I do not see anymore that I miss so much! Life is short and I wish I could see these folks again.

The area where we will conduct this emersion experience is in some of the most historic and scenic farms I have ever set my eyes on. Everyone of the marchers from the last several years were floored by the full autumn beauty of Virginia's Piedmont region. I hoped that the natural and historic beauty would be the hook, and it was. With miles of unpaved public and private roads bordered with stone fencing, peak autumn colors, few modern intrusions, stone homes and pastures galore, all in the shadow of the Blue Ridge.
