He uses it for 2nd coat due to price. It IS needed for second coat. He uses the minwax stuff for 1st coat since collodion doesn't come into contact with it. I was just using the balsam for both coats. For your question: other alternatives to take place of balsam react with collodion and mess up images.

I used to buy the stuff from Kennedy. I liked it. Van Dykes Restorers is also a good source for the sheets. McCarr does not sell "tin coated" stuff. I used to use their shim, it was ok. With the electro. tin, be sure to scuff it up good with a rough pad.

Mike (Artcraft) does not sell KCN or Ether anymore. Shelf life of UNsalted collodion is "supposedly" indefinite. Once salts are added, then the countdown begins. Make small batches as needed.

When I started, I made this miniature room with a door and the outside was covered with panneling. I actually had a kid think it was a porta potty. Keep a couple plates and your collodion pour bottle in your jacket pocket to keep warm. I've done fine down to below freezing with everything else cold. Beware the floating ice in the rinse water; I've had the ice piece rip the collodion when pulling plate from the water.

I have a theory about the New York lenses. I have messed with quite a few of them, and some at the same time. I think HBH and CC had optics made by the different makers, but I swear the brass was made by the same maker. My theory is that HBH and CC made their own optics and contracted out the brasswork. The other NY maker (Parker, I think) also looks the same.

Then do browse, and that should search within you computer, upload, and once uploaded right click the file name and "copy link location", then paste in where it asks when posting and hitting the image icon. Yes, I looked at the issue last night at Wally-world. The wet plate images were neat in the way, he always made sure to put a truck or other obvious modern thing in the image. Not really my thing, and I'm sure the same for most guys here, but if that is his thing, it was done nicely.

Drew, your representation is exactly as I did it. The fly did drape over the ridge pole only about half way down the other side. I staked it out away from the tent a little to help with rain. Also, at night or in rain, I would undo the fly poles and tie the fly angled down and store stuff under it. With it angled down, rain flows off pretty good.
