Hi goamules, I bought that C.C. Harrison (1850) a couple of weeks ago on ebay for $395.00. Half plate lens with excellent elements. To bad the lens wont fit on my camera:-( Same thing goes for my Holmes, Booth & haydens half-plate lens:-( Although, I'm thinking about trading one (Harrison or Holmes, Booth) which ever for a darlot landscape lens (pill form) if anyone has one to trade. The C.C. has

Hi, I just bought a C.C. Harrison serial No.909 for $395.00. It's missing the radial-drive piece and lens hood. I'm going to take off the parts to my other C.C. and put it on this one. My guess is that the lens was cut for stops sometime in the early 1860's. I was wondering when this lens left the work bench.1845-50? Thanks, -Race G.

Hi, is it possible to convert a petzval to a achromatic simply by switching the back element? Could this work on a C.C. Harrison? Thanks, Race

Hey, thanks! I'll try searching for it on the web! Speaking of polishing, I was having a huge problem buffing my silver plate on a chamois board. It would leave deep scratches! To fix this problem I took a sharp knife and started shaving the top of the leather gently until it became very soft. Then applied red iron oxide. Now it works really well! Scratch less plates! It appears that chamois work

He was killed before flash powder. In the Movie, Mr. James a.k.a Mr. Howard (song: It was that little coward who shot Mr. Howard) was roped to a wooden plank and photographed using the wet-plate process in 1882. Exposure was about 7 seconds. Then, they show that Saloon (Fords Exchange) scene dated 1892, Bob Ford is listening to Dorothy Evans (Zooey Deschanel) sing, "A Bird in a Gilded Cage", whic

Same here, the photographer A.W. Merrick in the mini-series "Deadwood" used flash powder every time he went to take a photograph. Back then, the only time flashlight powder would have been used was when the photographer had to take photographs at night or inside an establishment. A.W would always hid under the black veil before igniting the powder as if he were looking through the ground glass at

Richard, I see you bought the antique flash lamp! Great find! I have one lamp similiar to yours. Mine is a c.1909 flash lamp made by victor (smith-victor). I have about 6 lamps in my collection (1888-1916). If you intend to use it let me know! really easy to operate and wont break. Although, the spring will have to be replace at some point. Advice: don't buy any flash lamps that ignite the pow

I guess the seller was wrong about it being built in the daguerreian era. After sending a message and jpeg to Mark Osterman he says it was built c.1875. The Scovill headrest was built after the Samuel Peck design. Here is an old Thos H. McCollins's Catalogue. Mine is on the left page, top part. Of course, mine is not called the Centennial Head-Rest. It's named under something else in the Scovill

Ray, That sounds like a cool idea! If the coin is faced it could be hard to smooth it out. Wouldnt you have to make a plate holder for that? Is the coin all silver (no copper or other metals)? you could always buy a thin silver plated copper plate (quarter plate). Make the picture and cut a circle. -Race

Hi, How did daguerreotype artist's do portraites back in the day. Were the people that were being photographed under direct sunlight or were mirrors used? My portraite came out dark, just the skin tones though (portraite taken under shade: exposure-8:30 seconds). I was thinking about having my picture taken under direct sunlight but was afraid that my face would come out super light without any t

Does anyone know how to prevent mercury frost? It seems to appear on the darker areas of the photograph. Could this be the cause of unfiltered mercury? This one came out exceptionaly well.

Thank You Mr. Hurlock! Before, I was setting my spot meter to ISO 100 according to Jonathan Danforth's becquerrel exposure chart. Now, I know you develope your dags using the cold mercury process (vacuum) but do you ever do the heated process? I,m kind of curious to see your fumehood/equipment set up. What kind of camera and lens do you use? Thank You

When I shoot landscapes or portraits the shadowed areas seem to not show up. If I used bromine, will that capture the shadowed areas or is it just a quickener (reduces exposure time)? should I leave the plate over mercury longer to achieve better results? Does over developement cause mercury spots or blobs (excluding measles)?

Hi Todd, this is my set up. I use an Airfiltronix fume hood with special mercury filters (very expensive). My mercury bath is pretty simple. I use a plate holder on top of a cooking pot (only used for mercury). Of course, I use two metal cylinders to keep it off the ground (glass cups just for show) so I can heat the bottom with a propane torch. It's important to have mercury badges to detect fum

Hi everbody, I am finally making daguerreotypes using the heated mercury process. I will no longer make becquerel developed plates. I have been washing my plates with distilled water but still getting water spots. Perhaps I'm not washing them long enough. Currently working on the polishing techniques. The picture of the dag came out pretty grainy. Looks better in person.
