melainotype crimp stamp on images

I was able to add a couple of original images to my collection.
Both have a crimp like stamp on the bottom of the images. One says "patented 1856" the other says "Melainotype Plate For Neff's Pat 19 FEB 56"
Both are heavy gauge plates! One is japanned on the back and one is bare metal which I also find interesting.
I was doing some online research, and read that there was a patent dispute between the "Melainotype" of Neff and "Ferrotype" of Griswold.
Just out of curiosity, I was wondering how long these images needed to be crimped?

Why do you think they needed to be stamped? I always thought they were stamped because they wanted to advertise their product but I really have no idea. Email Mark Osterman, maybe he can shed some light on it.
