A magic lantern slide is nothing more than a sensitized plate exposed with a negative. The silver sunbeam and Lea's Manual of Photography describe the process.
It is best if the plate to be a slide is coated with a dry collodion or gelatin emulsion so the negative will have a direct emulsion to emulsion contact.
Otherwise, if a wet collodion plate is to be used, there needs to be a slight gap between the plates and the light used for exposure shuld be sharp so as not to difuse any light between negative and wetplate, resulting in an unsharp image.
If using dry plates, you can place both into a printing frame. One of the old wrightings suggested that to use a wetplate, it and the negative are to be placed in a plate holder with a paper mask between the two. and the dark slide removed for exposure.
Hope this helps.
