Just curious who on the forum is going to be attending Uncle John's get together at the end of the month. I've written him about attending, and was wondering what those who have been in the past have to say about it.

Well I for one am planning on attending. I will be driving out from the Left Coast and taking a week sojourn at Johns Farm with driving periods to and from. Of course this is all if the creek don't rise and flood the desert for me to cross.

I will also be there as well...I have never been there for the Jamboree, but was out at his place early last summer for a workshop. Luckily it was dry when I was there, but from what I have heard it is best to be prepared for alot of mud in case of rain....
See you there...I for one am very excited about the weekend....

I'm planning to be there. I participated in John's first workshop this year just before Memorial Day. Though it rained most of the time , it wasn't raining too heavily and the mud wasn't so bad. But, just in case, I'll be bringing boots. smiling smiley I had an interesting time at the workshop, met some great folks, and am looking forward to repeating that experience and hearing some tales around the campfire in a couple weeks.

I plan on attending from the Mississippi Delta. I attended John's workshop last year and just this summer getting my wetplate kit together. My old Ford F150 loves the gasoline stops so I am considering taking the train to Rochester(any suggestions) and just bringing a camera instead of all my gear in hopes I could buy chemical and share a darkbox. Depends on the $$ for train versus fuel. Traveling in the truck is better for me as I tend to overpack and do not have to be dependant on others. Anyone traveling from the southeast or the route from the south??

I really want to go but will not be able to make it again this year. I will be moving out of my house that weekend. For all those that are going I know it will be a great event, say hello to John for me.

Euphus,
Where are you from? Tell me about yourself. I'm just north of Birmingham.

I had laid initial plans to go to John's but other committments came up, and finances were a little short, so it's on hold til next year.
You can take the Crescent (Amtrack) from New Orleans, Slidell, Hattiesburg, Meridian, just about any stop along the line in between. It's an overnight trip as far as DC, and maybe another couple of hours beyond to NYC. Don't know just how close you can get to John's by rail, but there may be commuter or intercity service within New York State.
I would stongly recommmed getting a roomette aboard the train. It's considered 1st class, so meals are included. There's mighty fine eats on the train, but expensive if your traveling coach. The roomettes are more expensive, but far more comfortable and private (as in private 'facilities') than coach and there are even showers available, although you won't have nearly as much personal interaction with other passengers. Another advantage are the first class passenger accomodations at the station. I know Union Station has a nice private waiting area, with secure baggage storage, but I don't know about NYC.
Traveling by train is far safer and less exhausting than attempting such a drive by yourself espicially considering the distance.

Hope to meet you one day,

Thanks for the info Frank. I live in Greenville, Mississippi. I can catch the Amtrack in Greenwood which is about an hour away.
