I havent been here for a while because I have been playing around with gelatin emulsions and have come up with a way to make dry plate tintypes with home made emulsion and trophy plates, Sorry!

I still have my wetplate stuff.

I will try to make this as short as possible, there are a number of steps as there are in wetplate, but here is a capsualized version.

The first thing is the emulsion. I use the same one as found on unblinkingeye.com , There are a few simple modifications, add all the silver at once,no need to digest or ripen, add the extra gelatin, mix welland set etc.

The gelatin I use is photo gelatin from art craft, and needs to have a sensitiser added wich is a .02% solution of hypo. You can use the food gel but I like to have more consistensy over the sensitivety.

The plates are the usual trophy plate coated with poly urithane spray so the emulsion wil stick. Let it dry for at least two days. To help the urithane stick better the plate can be lightly scuffed with a green scuffing pad like the 3M brand.

The developer is dektol 1:1 with (here is the secret part) 1 gm per oz. of Ammonium thyocyanate,The stuff from elementalscientific.net works well, I tried amm.thyocy. from photographers formulary and it caused too much fog in shadow areas and produced strong ammonia fumes when used.

The exposed plate is developed 90sec,rinsed etc.

Exposure is about the same as a collodion tintype. I made a whole bunch of 6th plates to experiment with, be shure that you test with a camera that you are going to use because I found out that all f: stops are not the same.

The plates can be reused by simply washing under very warm water and rubbing the plate clean, then dry with paper towel. Dont worry about scraches, the urithane is fairly tough.

If you are serious about this process and have more questions just ask, I did not give all the detailed instructions for the emulsion, but it is simpler than what is shown on the emulsion instructions.
