wet-plate publication

I know that Scully & Ostermann printed the Collodion Journal, but since I'm a newbie I never got a chance to check it out. Has anyone else thought about starting something like this? It seems to me that more and more people are getting into this process each day and I would think a magazine style publication would be quite popular. I know it would be a lot of work. Just a thought.

You have no idea the work putting a magazine out is. I wish I had never taken on the task. As it is I'm planning on in about 2 years doing a wet plate issue of Emulsion. I want that long of a lead time so I can have enough time in my mind to learn it.

Oh as an aside I have sunk over 40K into getting the magainze started. I still dump in around 2 to 3K every few months. Maybe someday I will get paid back some of that money, but I'm not holding my breath waiting. You'll find photographers are the worst critics of anything to do with reproductions of photographs. Every single person has their own idea and will if hinted at give you a long and lengthy diatribe about what you did wrong, without them knowing what it took to get it to that point in the first place. Doing a good job on producing a magazine is one where you can't just slap it together in photoshop and print it on your home printer. If you want a newsleter that is another matter. Then comes the bite of the mail. When researching the postage costs I was told at the USPS to send the magazine overseas would be at most $5 each. Well the cheapest I have found so far is $7.95. Ok guys sorry about the mini rant. Magazines sound good and fun, but they are a royal PIA.

Aggie, I didn't say you had to do it! :-)
I'm sure it is VERY hard work. I've worked for plenty of publications before. I like being on the visual side. I couldn't imagine doing the actually publishing.

I didn't take it as you meant I should do it. I just want to scare a few people who think it is easy to put out a magazine. Of course someone forgot to tell me there were how too books, and I didn't read them. I did what was supposedly impossible to do in business. Maybe next time I open my big mouth to take on a project, I will read the books first.

I also had help in the form, of Brooks Jensen of Lenswork mentoring me. I can't thank that man enough for all the help he has given me.

Greetings ~ About the Scully Osterman Collodion Journals. I spoke with Mark Osterman yesterday and was assured that there is a reprint in store for us that would enjoy the series in the near future, either on a DVD or in print. In the meantime, remember that this work is copyrighted and cannot be distributed in any way without Scully and Ostermans approval. I know I have a complete set and would never consider selling it. A journal way ahead of it's time. So with all the new collodion artists since these days, your wait will be well worth it.

My regards>>>Will Dunniway
