paper sleeves/folders

During the civil war period, were tintypes given out in paper folders or in "dag" cases? I know later "carnival" tintypes were paper sleeved, but what about 1860's?

I have come across reference of Potter's Patent paper sleeves, yet not sure of years used.

I think a lot of the tintypes were given out with only a matte on them. The corners were clipped and the brass matte bent over at the four corners.

Paper mattes were used too. I use one for my quarter plates that was copied from an original by Will Dunniway. It consists of a matte with a tombstone shaped opening that goes into a paper folder. It has 2 gold lines around the tombstone window.

I see a lot of CW period gem sized and larger tintypes in paper CDV sized mattes.

Here is a page I found on the net. I didnt read it all for accuracy but it looks pretty good.

How's this quote for accuracy?

1. Disadvantages of ambrotypes:
1. A very slow (up to 20 sec.) exposure, compared to 2 sec. for a
daguerreotype.

He seems to have gotten it backwords.

I make my 1/6 plate tintype sleeves based on this design. It is from a web site that discusses the sun tax on photographs during the civil war. Here is their example:

I designed a template in Adobe InDesign, and then hand cut and glue the flaps on the back. I also made a stamp with some original design work from a period photographer and place my studio backmark on the back of each envelope. It is time consuming, but looks really nice and completely period correct.

Would paper sleeves be suitable for ambrotypes as well?
