Following their defeat at Gettysburg and the inconclusive fighting in the fall, Lees weakened, yet defiant 65,000 man Army of Northern Virginia spent the winter of 1863-64 in and around Orange, VA. Meanwhile, the Army of the Potomac swelled to over 120,000 men of all arms just across the Rapidan River. South of the river Gen. Lee would ride, often accompanied by his corps commanders, to the top of nearby Clarks Mountain to view the gathering sea of white tents to the north. Fellow officers suggested Grant might swing west towards Gordonsville. Lee gazed to the east to the large "Wilderness" area he knew so well. "No he will cross there," said Lee, pointing to the fords entering the dense scrub forest, " and it is there we shall meet him." What soon followed was the bloodiest three months of the Civil War. Grant would lose more men during these months than all the western federal armies had lost in three years of fighting. Come to the largest Civil War reenactment ever held in the state of Virginia as thousands of reenactors gather from around the world to reenact the bloodiest campaign in the most desperate year of the wa r 1864. |
