There are reenacting officers that I would gladely go to combat with, and there are one who cut themselves with thier own dull swords. There are Modern officers I would charge the very gates of the Hot Country with, and Modern real officers I wouldnt P*** on if they were on fire.

Reenacting side, my current LT, a non combat veteran, is still a very tactically proficient (period) and is concerned not about rank but the men under him. And he lets his NCO's do their jobs.

Conversly, I had a two officers when I went to Iraq that scare the crap out of me.. one was indirectly warned by the other Company Commanders that if he didn't back off of us, something bad was gonna happen to him...he never gave us any down time during train up, he almost article 15d a guy for swearing, and was just a martinet...we were not looking forward to going to combat with him... and it got proven out... during a convoy he stopped along the MSR to buy watermelons!!!

The other was our battalion commander, who demonstrated his cowardice in front of the CG of the 1st Cav... diving under a table when he heard a distant detonation. This guy slept in his armor, and hid in a bunker when we drew fire at a check point he was visitng. This guy had the audacity to walk into an aid station, where one of our medics had just had a New Iraqi Army soldier die in his arms, and was still covered in that soldiers blood, and ask if they had been doing any good training.... oh yeah.. we changed his name.. from LTC Wung to LTC WRONG. His SGM wasnt much bettter
