The battalion commander was likely Charlie Guffee of the Jeff Davis Rifles.

Default Why Drill?

Bottom line, drill is related to discipline. Disciplined battalions can react on the field way better than those who are undisciplined. Also, a well drilled battalion means astute officership, battalion commanders who can interpret and follow the relayed orders as they are received.

It does not matter if it is Division, Battalion, or the smallest unit/mess...Drill should be paramount.
I am a firm believer and enforce that if you do not drill...you do not fall in and take the field. I will not have you be a hazard and an embarrassment to the others who put forth the effort!

No, my first event was with Breckinridge during the Guffee/Elmore days (Perryville 1976). No, the Cheathams organization was commanded by a guy from Florida. I can still remember what he looked like clearly, probably because I can remember studying him and his twin closely, likely because they were the first twins I can recall seeing.

It is funny how I can recall such details from events so long ago, but with events beginning about 1985, they all start blurring together. I can remember being someplace, but can't tell you when. Or I can remember when I went, but can't recall much about the event itself.

Of course, I started drinking a lot more around '85 or '86 ...
