We did it in 2003 and we're going to do it again in 2008. It's grueling if you do it all, but we're opening it up for participants to "drop in" and out along the way. We're promised a contingent of Australians to keep things lively.
Rest and Prep June 25 1:30 AM Thursday June 26, Fairfax Courthouse, Va. to 4PM Wednesday July 2, Gettysburg, Pa. 120 miles. Five days marching, one day resting, then 17 hours to cover 35 miles. Original route, original timetable. Use what you carry. We'll supply the water, period rations, moleskin and bivouac. Limited to 35 participants at any one time. You'll be amazed at what you can do. Start getting ready now. No kidding. Stickbug aka Doug "Mile and a half" mess The first quality of a soldier is constancy in enduring fatigue & hardship. Courage is only second. -Napoleon Bonaparte

I'm already working on the kitchen pass. It's very difficult for me to imagine that I could complete any signficant portion of this, but I am very willing to try to prove myself wrong.

Dear Doug,
Is there an age limit for this march?

We'd probably want to have participants over at least 16. Preferably 18 for insurance reasons. How old are you?

Chris would be open to that, I suppose. But whether we could get it through the local authorities would be the problem. And I made a commitment to this event before Chris announced his, so I expect to stick to the historical dates. Anyone that wants to go there and come back is welcome though.

Doug,
I'm going to help my unit establish itself at its first PL event, so I'll have to pull out of the line of march after Friday's march, but I'd like to join you for the first three days, if that's OK. -Joe Bordonaro PS And, yes, Doug wasn't kidding. Start walking now. Last time I started out at two miles (wearing brogans) and worked up to 18 miles. And it was still tough.

Joe,
You are always welcome for as long as you care to be there, my friend. I'll put you down for the three days. Friday's end will put us across the Potomac at Edward's Ferry. Too bad the dates didn't work out better, but we'll make the best of it. Cheerz! Doug

Esteemed Mr. Stickbug,
Please add my e-mail address (listed below, under my name) to those who wish to remain informed about the upcoming June 2008 march. My purpose is not to be very much of a participant. Instead, I would like to be able to intersect the line of marchers at some point, after leaving my wagon under a convenient shady spot, then head out a mile or two to intersect your group of hardy hikers and attempt to gather some images while you are on the move or at a rest stop that will, I hope, help preserve the effort for the ages. Please let me know, publicly or privately, if this suggestion is amenable with your plans. After I march back with you to the general area of my starting point, I would bid the group farewell and head out to document the rest of the event. I thank you in advance for your consideration. Julio
