Would you wear a cotton(not wool) civilian frock coat today? Like in Church? I dont mean adding the vest and the trousers, just the frock coat.

I really like the frock coat and would get one in black. I was told by my grandmother that I shouldn't because she thinks that'll look silly. Many people may think the same way but I still like it and would wear one to Church. How about you?

Well, I wouldn't wear the one in the pictures because they fit terribly, but my family does wear their coats for other places, outside of events. I do too, sometimes a period paletote is just the thing to keep out the rain.

Well, I can't speak for myself since I'm of the female gender, but David wears his officers frock to church when he wants to dress up, and he has a gray wool confederate frock that he wears in the fall/winter when it's not quite cold enough for his really heavy modern jacket. He told me he wanted to wear a frock coat to his senior prom, but didn't since his date (not me) was very much against the idea.

I don't think it looks silly. I like it. There are few things more manly looking than a guy in a well fitted frock. There is such an air of old fashioned gentlemanliness about them!

Yes. No. Maybe.

IMHO, it is more solemn, respectful, and "appropiate" than the rock and roll, beer company and cigarette ad T-shirts, muscle shirts, blue jeans, shorts, and flop-flops I see at Catholic and Protestant services these daze.

On the other hand, IMHO, wearing an 1860's civilian outfit or officers outfit to a modern "civiian" church service seems to maybe smack of "Hey, look at me!" and distract people from their worship and "who" things are about.

But then again, I am "old fashioned," and there is a perceived and real need to try to get young people "back to church."

I most certainly couldn't wear my Confederate frock anywhere outside of an event. It smells horrible, has plenty of stains and just does not have a place outside of an event. Just my two cents.

Can’t say about a frock coat since I am not a man, but I wear some of my re-enactment dresses to church. I do not wear the full pagoda sleeves or anything like that, just the simpler work dresses without a hoop. I have tried to get my brother to wear a vest as I think it looks really sharp with a suit, but he would not do it outside of a re-enactment.

My reason for wanting to wearing a frock coat to Church has nothing to do with what others will think of me nor trying to seek attention. I like the frock coat look a lot better than modern coats worn today at Church.

Yes, that word would definitely be appropriate.

Perhaps I am biased in my opinion since I hate the things most men wear now a days. I fell in love with my husband when I saw a picture of him in uniform. That, and his beard. I was NOT impressed by the jeans and Lynard Skynard t-shirt(uncertain if that is spelled correctly) he was wearing the first time I met him. I don't think a quietly colored and unobtrusive frock coat would be terribly out of place in a conservative church (such as we go to). Many plain churches have men who wear coats very similar in appearance to a frock coat or sack coat. My husbands red trimmed artillery jacket with its row of bright buttons, now, that CAN be a distraction.

Nicole, I have also worn a work dress, without hoops, to church on occasion!

I wear my civilian frock coats all the time, I have five or six. Sometimes I have gotten extreme or negative reactions from the public, but I don't care. I really despise the modern trashman look.
I wear the full outfit to Goth clubs, ie frock, waistcoat, top hat, cravat, pocket watch, etc. I wear the frock coat with just a dress shirt to concerts, the mall or the movies. Most of the time my dates get cold in the theater and they love it when I give them to coat to wrap up in. When I'm at home in NC in the winter I wear a frock coat and it's much warmer than a modern jacket or coat. I also have a short Wahmaker Old West jacket that I wear with a derby a lot.
Once a hip-hopper yelled "Hey, ****ing Halloween's over!" and I yelled back "At least my clothes FIT." It's usually the Hip Hoppers who like to make snide comments. (Though once I was mistaken for a Minister.) I think this is funny because Hip Hoppers are always babbling about how they are "judged" by the mainstream because of their dress and "lifestyle", but they are just as intolerant.
