    Default Battles of Davis' Mills

The Battles for Davis' Mills Committee, Burton's Sugar Farm, he Jeff Davis Guard, and Morton's Battery are pleased to host The Battles for Davis' Mills. This year's reenactment will be held on October 3-5, 2008. Your willingness to participate in this event compliments the history Michigan City, Mississippi and its civil war heritage. THANK YOU! Our goal is to remember that it is YOU, the reenactors, that make this event what it is and we want to make sure that you will make it a point to include this event on your 2008 schedule. Our events in the past were a great success with an average of 300 reenactors for the three events. A portion of the profits made from this year's event will go to the Beauvior to help restore the Last Home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis which was damaged during Hurricane Katrina.

On October 3-5, 2008, reenactors will gather at Burton's Sugar Farm located on Highway 72, about 45 miles west of Corinth, MS to reenact the Battles of Davis' Mills. It will be held on 500 acres of pasture land that features ponds, woods to screen troop movements, hills, and valleys. This is a campaigner’s dream site. Saturday will feature each army conducting Camplife, drills, and pickety duty for the public and a scripted battle at 2:00 PM. Sunday will also feature a morning tactical. A military ball is also scheduled Saturday night.

The event will highlight two battles, the December 21, 1862 Battle of Davis' Mills (Vand Dorn's 1862 Raid) and the June 12, 1864 battle (Forrest's Pursuit of Sturgis from Brices' Crossroads). All branches of service are welcomed. Artillery is limited to ten guns (would love to have two horse drawn pieces). Cavalry will love the terrain. Usual anemities provided (wood, hay, water) and powder rations for artillery, and a meal on Saturday night.

Spectators ticket prices are $10.00 for a daily pass. For further information contact Larry McCluney, 1412 North Park Dr., Greenwood, MS, 38930, (662)-453-7212 (after 5:00 pm) or email at confederate@roadrunner.net - Visit the web site at: http://humphreys1625.homestead.com/DavisMills.html

Registration fee is $5 for all reenactors who submit their registration forms. Walk-ons are welcomed, but the committee encourages you to pre-register by September 15, 2008 because after that date, fees go up to $10.00. Your pre-registration fee goes toward the necessary anemities and passes to all of the activities taking place the entire weekend.

All reenactors, including those who pre-registered, must check in upon arrival at the registration headquarters. Please remember that the availability of all amenities such as hay, straw, firewood, a meal, and gunpowder for artillery is based upon pre-registering by September 15, 2008. The field commanders will issue gunpowder to the Artillery commanders on Saturday morning during Officers Call for those who pre-registered. If you plan to arrive before Friday, October 3, 2008, please contact the Battle Committee in advance, so that we can make arrangements to assist you.

After each reenactment, we dedicate the battlefield in honor of each person who wore the uniform of self-sacrifice. After the sound of thundering hooves has been silenced and the smell of gunpowder still lingers over the crowd, we pause to better understand the sacrifices of the common soldier on both sides and the cause they fought for and believed.

We sincerely hope that you will come and join us this year to make this a memorable weekend for the reenactors and the spectators who come to watch. You are truly our guest and we appreciate the time you take out of your busy schedule to share this time of remembering with us.

    Default Battle of Davis' Mill

    Ladies and Gents,

I have been to this event for the last three years. You could not ask for a better place to have a reenactment. The field features re-created earthworks and has a great point of view for the public. Hope to see everyone there.

I'll echo what Greg and Larry have said about the event and the site. It is a good place to fight.

Also, my unit and any others who wish to join us will be camping inside the earthworks this year instead of the regular camping area. We will be actively improving the works as the event goes on. If this is of interest to you, come out and join us.
