    Default Period Baseball Revival

I thought this might be of interest to some people. It would be fun to recruit these guys to come to a living history event: http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/loc...,7992223.story

    BC,

we've got an 1860s club here in Gettysburg, my friend!

We're the Gettysburg Sentinels Vintage Base Ball Club, and we've got a charity game for the Children's Miracle Network Sept. 20th in the G'burg Rec Park. A year or so ago, we played for the US Army War College, and PBS was there filming. A great time was had by all!

    BTW,

I am pretty darn certain that wearing the stockings up like that is 1870s and later, as seen by the Cincy Red Stockings.

One of the largest convocations of vintage base ball will be in Columbus, OH Labor Day weekend during the Ohio Cup. Should be better than 20 men's teams and 2 or 3 ladies' teams competing. I don't think the game schedule has been published yet but games will be at Ohio Village (I-71 and 17th Avenue) typically start around 9 am.

I was amazed when I found a few years ago out how big Period Baseball was getting.

    Default Play for a Kingdom

    Shaun --

If you have not done so, you might try reading Thomas Dyja's great book, "Play for a Kingdom," which features not only baseball, but Zouaves (not your regiment, alas) and is set in the inferno of The Wilderness. I found it gripping.

    BC,

alas, the 14th Brooklyn were chasseurs a pied, and not zouaves...according to themselves! (Shh, here's a historical secret, the 14th Brooklyn's uniforms were actually an attempt to copy Ellsworth's US Zouave Cadets!)

I LOVE that book, and think it would be a great movie someday! Dyja also wrote another good book, "Meet John Trow", about a reluctant reenactor who delves too far into his first person portrayal and it's quite interesting.
