    Default Confederate Overcoat in Stock

I just finished another Atlanta History Center Overcoat that I started in March.

This civilian-style overcoat from the Archibald Smith family in Roswell, Georgia, was made by Anne Margaret Magill Smith (1807-1887) for her son, Archibald "Archie" Smith (1844-1923), who is known to have worn it while serving with the Georgia Battalion of Cadets during the winter of 1864-1865.

It has one outside pocket, detachable cape and is rather long. The coat weighs almost 10lbs.

SIZE: This is a size 44" chest, but as per the original coat it is rather long and comes down to the middle of my shin.

FABRIC: The coat is made from County Cloth's Brown Kersey, it's lined with homespun fabric in the body and the cape is lined with red wool flannel. It comes with civilian coin buttons.

PRICE: The price is $495.00. I estimated there are over 6,000 visible hand stitches in the coat and a few thousand not visible. It also has 21 hand sewn buttonholes.

I'm not going to make another one of these coats until 2009, so if you want one, my advice is to buy it now!

    Default Overcoat

dang Chris, that's a deal for a coat of that complexity. For anyone who hasn't seen it at the Atlanta History Center, its one heck of a coat. I've been working on one myself for over two years now, I just can't seem to get over my A.D.D. with the pattern. It has always had a special place in my heart since it was worn by a Georgia Military Institute cadet and I was a member of the corps of cadets from its replacement school Georgia Military College. Someone better jump on this coat because its a good value for the amount of work.

Yeah, it's a bear to work on. I estimated I had over 40 hours in the coat, the fabric cost me about $260.00 so that works out to $5.88 an hour...what's minimum wage these days? I could be making more working at McDonalds!

Thanks for the compliment Ross, If you need help with the coat gimme a call. This is the 2nd one I've made and don't plan on making a 3rd until 2009 (one a year is good enough for me).
