“… and know that it was in California we learned the art of making long journeys with safety, to endure privations with cheerfulness, and to thrive under the most adverse circumstances, and these have enabled us to make strides in war which may seem gigantic to the uninitiated.”
(excerpt from a letter from Gen. W. T. Sherman to Governor Frederick Low of California, dated Goldsborough, N.C. March 24, 1865)

It has to do with not looking for the exception to the rule, but blending into the typical.

Why do people refer to this vendor as "N.J. ******" or some other shorthand?
I am not up on my New Jersey lingo; could this be a word that should not be uttered outside the Garden State? Am I now gonna wake up with the fishes?

It is because that certain vendor threatened a lawsuit against the owner of another Forum if his name was used on that site, either in public forum or in the sale of new/used goods. All references to his name was to be obscured or removed. And if it's mentioned there, that's the way it is mentioned.
