    Arrow cord

I just bought a bugle from R.J. Samp. Anyone know how to tie a cavalry bugle cord? How long should it be? Where can I buy one?

    Thanks!

Why not ask RJ himself? He's most certainly an expert on Civil War bugles and their use.

About how to tie one, photographs of originals and viewing/handling an original (which may perhaps be at your local, hometown historical society) are also good places to start, as are websearches.

I asked him, and he explaned it to me on the phone.. talk about confusing.. I was looking for may be a picture or a step by step illustration.. I have done web searches and have some pics.. but these cords look very difficult to tie.

Mike, a long time ago there was a Web page with illustrations on how to braid a bugle cord like the dandy Zouave (row 3, right): http://www.tapsbugler.com/CWbuglers/...lerphotos.html

I'll try to find it but I doubt it's still up. In the meantime, you ask RJ and Jari Villanueva http://www.tapsbugler.com/buglersthroughhistory.html

    PResumably you don't crochet.

So, the first step is to have someone teach you how to make a crochet chain and be able to do it.

Second, you do the same thing with your bugle cord, except use your pointer finger instead of a crochet hook.

That's how you get the braid depicted in many pictures.

    Good luck!

    Thanks Kevin, Joanna, and Frenchie.

A Crochet chain is a perfect example of how to make a nice braided carrying strap.

a picture or a how to diagram is worth a thousand words. ..

Unfortunately explaining it on a cell phone whilst doing the noon time exercise walk isn't the best situation to explain 'the old dog goes into the hole and jumps Over the other log' Boy Scout knot tying methodology.

Both the website and ftp sites are up and running (new hard drive, new NIC).

Have Bill Tojek explain it to you!

And the Braiding or Wrapping part is the hard one....and this PDF doesn't even go into that!
