    Default Paymaster

I am putting together a Federal paymaster impression, and not having much luck finding information on them. I've tried the search function, and come up empty handed. What little I've found about them comes from what is written in personal journals of some of the men that they paid, and is not very flattering. I've found good information and an image of an actual surviving pay-chest, and made a copy. The forms are also easy to come by. What I need to know is: I know that most of them were majors, but what color shoulder straps did the wear? I'm assuming dark blue...Second, were they attached to specific units, or did they report directly to a paymaster general? I would assume that they had a side-arm of some sort? Probably provided by themselves? The regs really don't say too much about these individuals. Any information would be most useful.
    Thanks in advance!

From GPO in 1863; very nice bedtime reading. Scott's Military Dictionary, under "Paymasters" gives the rank of the 25 paymasters of the pre-war army as major (PMG was a Colonel; deputy PMG was a lieutenant colonel). Article XLV of the Regulations describes the process and various forms, as well as the relationship of the Pay Department to the Second Auditor and Second Comptroller of the Treasury.

That reminds me -- the "Army and Navy Journal" (CD of 1864-65 issues available from Paperless Archives) has several articles in July and August of 1865 that discuss the duties of paymasters. I just came across them yesterday and haven't had time to read them, but you should check them out. And the CD's only $15.
