The United States Sanitary Commission gave instruction for a number of different items for use in aiding soldiers. A bed sack and pillow was called for in publications along with other items for hospital use. Offered is a reproduction from these directions It folds very compactly and can be easily stuffed with straw. The reproduction includes a bed sack and pillow, both with a USSC stamp and utility button closures. $75 , shipping included, Paypal Preferred

I was just coming over to say thank you, Quickstep! Ships tomorrow.

A customer calls to my attention the need for pictures and information on the "USSC Bedding for Hospital Use"

Here's the deal--The particular ones available now are made of a blue woven stripe ticken. That's going to vary, as I am constantly on the lookout for variations on the theme. If I find a good strong vintage ticken fabric, I'll even piece it to get the needed amount if that preserves a period look.

This run has paper back tin utility buttons. The next may have bone, pewter, china, or Mexican War --as I look to what might have been in button boxes of the period, that volunteer organizations would have gathered to make these donated wartime supplies.

The specs also call for crash or burlap. I will make a burlap bed sack on a custom order basis, with the caveat that period burlap would have had a higher tow content than available today. Crash is a plain weave linen, and is also available as a custom order.

I do offer a crash sheet to meet the USSC specifications "Sheets. Linen and cotton. 8 feet long. 4 feet wide. Required, one-half skein of cotton or one-twelfth part of a hank. " They are $65. Linen is high these days. Its a fine thing to have on a hot mosquito ridden night though, as it breaths better than a modern cotton sheet.

Attached are pictures--they don't show much, as this is, after all, a bed sack. The neat square package is the pillow with the sack buttoned inside

Thank you John, Claude, Ivan and Ralph. Your packages shipped today.

For those who wish to purchase an individual towel, you may order them through the Army of the Ohio webpage, as a part of their preservation effort for flags in the OHS collection. http://www.armyoftheohio.com/donations.asp When you go to their website, you may see other Needful Things.....

If they are out, Bundles of 5 are available, Will Vanderberg.

I just don't sell 'singles' --both the AoO and Joe Smotherman do.

Folks will find Joe behind the lines with a pushcart or a couple of barrels and a plank at quality events

OH CRAP, I think I may have done a boner......I didn't see an area in which to state what I wanted when I donated.

Oh well. At least, it's to a good cause.
