I did mine in the Navy as an HT 1984-1987 active and three reserve. He's going all the way hardcore and I am one proud pappy for sure. Thanks for all the replies, I'll pas these along to him.

Good for him. A lot of young boys have become fine young men through military service.
The Marines are especially adept at making men out of boys. Best wishes on his service and thanks.
And congrats to what I know is a proud Papa.

As mentioned earlier, a few websites for the parent of a Recruit:

Recruitparents.com - has a discussion forum and store for Marine related items.

http://parrisisland.yuku.com/directory (this is a discussion forum and seems to be mostly administered by wives of drill instructors. they post photos of recruits when they see them on the island and identify the recruit platoons as often as possible. almost like a support group.)

http://www.facebook.com/ParrisIsland - This Facebook page has new photos of recruits in action every week. It was started while my son was going through recruit training, so it isn't very old.

Granted these are for the Parris Island recruits, but I'm sure those Hollywood boys have similarly dedicated sites.

Tell him to take each day one meal at a time and the weeks will fly by.

Well his azz belongs to the Corps now! Dropped him off Mon. 15 april at the recruiter's office, went to MEPS KCMO to see him swear-in, got the 5 second scripted call about 00:42 am CST on 17 April, so his whole world is upside down by now. Grad date is set for 12 July and I'm going Amtrack. Oooorah!

I don't mean to sound dumb (I was a DAT after all) but where do they train Marines? If it's at Quantico, make sure you visit the new Museum of the Marine Corps. It's so awesome it made me want to sign up again.

Yes, he's at San Diego where I went through basic in 1984 as Navy recruit! From what I understand when all the base closings took place in the 1990's, the Marines incorporated the USNRTC San Diego into the Camp Pendleton station and have used that as the basic training location since. Funny, we used to taunt each other with insulting cadences across the chain-link fence during PT excersises back then (us squids and the jar-heads).

My son is supposed to ship in September as well for Parris Island. We couldn't be prouder. We told his Recruiting Sgt. that we wanted him for the Summer. Let's hope it works. One of his buddies went from August to 2 days after high school graduation. What's his MOS going to be? My son is going Crypto-linguist. Best of luck! - Jeff
