Greetings-
January 1, 1863 was celebrated in Beaufort, SC as a day of emancipation and the day the 1st South Carolina Infantry (Colored) was mustered into Federal service. It was a big celebration with feasting, speeches and prayer.
James H. Fowler was the Chaplain to the 1st and offered a prayer to start the day's festivities. Does anyone know what the prayer was?
