Default To Stripe or not to Stripe

    Hello folks,
As a new person getting into this hobby it falls on me to make sure that the period clothing I choose is appropriate, authentic, and as real as possible. After all, we are presenting a living history. I have searched on line for pants and have noted that some Sutler Sources have stripes on the Union Pants and some do not. As I am part of a mounted cavalry unit, are stripes appropriate. I have to admit that in several of the CW pictures I have seen, no one is wearing stripes on the pants. Just wondering........Thanks

    Sir,
Welcome to the hobby! The very best person to help you would be an NCO in your unit. They should be able to steer you in the right direction. But in the meantime, unless you are portraying an NCO or officer, stay away from the trowser stripe. The 1/2 inch stripe was authorized for corporals, and the 1 inch stripe was for Sergeants/First Sergeants/Senior NCOs. A private should have trowsers devoid of stripes. When you purchase trowsers, you will want to find a pair with the reinforced seat. Also, you want to check the seams inside the trowsers under the reinforcement. The seams should be turned to face the reinforcement on the seat and the inner legs. I hope this helps!

    Best Regards,
