Exclamation 19th Century Firemen/Fire Zouaves Needed 8-11, Gettysburg, PA

    Gents,
the Gettysburg Fire Department is requesting a contingent of 19th century firemen/fire zouaves to participate in their annual muster and parade. We will be pulling an original hose cart from 1863 for the parade. Participants would meet at the Gettysburg FD Hall and be transported by the FD to the parade site in Heidlersburg, PA.

The event is Saturday, August 11th.

For more info, please PM me or post below.

    Thank you!

I should add that, last year at least, we were invited to the concert and events that were put on in the evening, as well.

This event sounds awesome, but I will have to do more research into getting a kit around for next year.

    Hi,

What are the clothing requirements/guidelines? Is there a website for the impression?

    Thanks,

What about the 73rd New York, 2nd Fire Zouaves? Or the 72nd PA, Baxter's Philadelphia Fire Zouaves (apparently you even have an ancestor that was in that unit)? The irony of course is that most units calling themselves "Fire Zouaves" were not uniformed like true Zouaves.

Although not designated as "Fire" Zouaves, the 5th and 9th New York, among other NY units, had a large number of firemen in their ranks. Would they qualify?

(P.S. Mark, Is the page on your website about "The Daybreak B'hoys" just a joke, or are is it a legit liviing history group? I note it hasn't been updated since December 2002 and it reads rather tounge-in-cheek, so I'm assuming is it either a fabrication or just an idea that never panned out in the wake of Scorsese's "Gangs of New York" movie.)

    Henry,

Marc posted the link; he knows what he's talking about when it comes to this event, and all things Fire Zouave. He offered up the guidelines link because it is the correct link. I recommend taking a look at it and reading the results of years of ongoing research.

As for zouave units and their uniforms (fire zouaves or otherwise) you're talking to two of the most-well-versed fellows on the subject.

Kevin, the link that was posted will tell you all that you need to know. No accoutrements or weapons needed for this event. Just the trowsers, shirt, and hat. A very simple look.

The event is in support of the Gettysburg Fire Department, which has not dictated specific units. The colors being carried are those of the 11th NY, and the 11th was represented at this event last year, as were period firemen. Mr. Coyle requested a website with uniform guidelines, thus I replied with that of the 11th New York impression which had been organized in 2006 and again in 2011. It is not, as you suggest, to say that there's a restraining order against 72nd PA/73rd NY/5th/9th NY. The simplicity of the 11th NY impression has merely allowed many people to pull it off as a one-time deal with minimal superfluous investment.

The Daybreaks (it's Marc, by the way) was formed before the movie came out, and kept its online presence due to the interest (and the desire to sort fact from fiction) that the movie generated. It hasn't been updated, though the archival material needs no updating, though the group has participated in living history programs in and around NYC. It comprises people with membership in other organizations, but exists to interpret metropolitan military units and local civilians at small regional events as necessary.

    Thanks for your interest.

    Hi,

I did not mean to start a war on this posting. Being a 33 year member of a fire company and having a relative in Company N of the 72nd Pa, I was interested in what was worn by the firefighters of the time.
