    Default March to Gettysburg?

I know there's been some discussion about the various 150th Anniversary Gettysburg events, but are there any plans for a march, preservation or other, to Gettysburg next year? I know there's been a a march by some Federals in the past but I'm interested in a Confederate march. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I'm 56 and know this is my last hurrah at G'burg so I'd like to do/get in as much as I can while I can. Thanks.

Other than legendary Federal Sixth Corp March that Doug Dobbs puts on, I've not heard of any marches of substance underway.

There are some other proposed marches of much shorter duration that are waiting for NPS permits, and a Cav ride that has gotten approvals.

Silas Tackitt put on the last Confederate march of decent length (about 15 miles based on the shuttle route I took, moving men to the step off point). He says he is not organizing a thing next year.

From what I can tell, there is a gap that needs filling.

I'm not goen to either Gettysburg. The march I organized as part of Anders event a few years ago was from the Caledonia State Park down the Cashtown Pike (after following a natural gas pipeline over one heck of a mountain) through Cashtown and eventually ending at Needle and Thread. We were portraying Confederates who marched from what is now Caledonia State Park to Gettysburg on 26 June 1863. For us, it was seventeen plus miles in ninety plus heat. We weren't that far away from Anders' event site, but we were played out. Chris Anders drove me to the hospital that night and they admitted me. Good times.

A well known individual in the hobby organized a one mile march - a whole mile! - into downtown the following week and got lots of press for the great march they did.

The only march about which I've heard for the 150th is Dobb's Sixth Corps march. Brutal. Brutal. But, I haven't heard any active plans. Maybe he'll step up with info.

I am involved with one of the three Illinois companies being formed for the living history at Vicksburg next May. Not sure what I'm doing at the two Chickamaugas yet, but I know I'm going to both. By the way, the two events about which I write are a living history at the park on one weekend and the other is the BGA mainstream event the following week. There aren't competeing mainstream events. Yet.

"While the original battle [Gettysburg] may arguably be considered the epicenter of the history of the war, the GAC reenactment is not the epicenter of the hobby. To confuse or equate the two is unfortunate. - Bernard Biederman, 6 July 2012

"Authenticity conflicts occur when reenactors from one end of the spectrum attend events at the other end of the spectrum then try to impose their own standards instead of event standards."

Though not long in length, I am looking into the entire SD and folks who fall in with us to march into the BGA event in the early hours Saturday....hopefully since we are portraying Heth's Division, directly into the fight.

After MMM I plan to start working this one...

    Mr. Anders,
If you could please keep me in mind if you do this I would deeply appreciate it. I've been a reenactor for over 30 years and pretty sure when we do the Lincoln Funeral March here in Springfield at the end of the 150th cycle I'll be done (at least militarily). I missed the 125th Gettysburg and want to make sure I go to the BGA 150th and maximize that experience. Right now I'm in great shape ( lost 35 lbs., ran a 1/2 marathon in April, play hockey several days a week, etc.) so know at least right now I'm physically up to such an event. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, the 6th Corps March is still happening, and still on the original dates.

The planning is largely being done via Facebook groups, but I'll be posting info here shortly. If you haven't started practicing yet, you're two months behind the eight ball.

    Eric,
Can you send me information on this march? My email is: truyle2305@hotmail.com. I don't have facebook. This sounds very interesting.

Dave has the lead on organizing the Sixth Corps March this time around. I'm supporting with logistics and perhaps walking a stretch or two.

Here's the link to the pages on my web site that I put up for the 2008 effort. There's a lot on there about the historical event, maps, etc. especially under the "Further Information" at the bottom of this page:

In the past I've run this as a "cafeteria" event, pick your section and join us. As long as the numbers stay low we can do that. If 100 guys show up, that gets more difficult.
