    Default Gettysburg

It looks like we will be headed to BGA. Not set in stone but a good choice to me. I did the 135th and the ground was great. I was at BGA Shiloh and it did have problems but it was a great event. Coming from Missouri we can only do one event and I would be happy to do BGA. It also gives us time to explore the battlefield and town without all the 4th of July crowd, and I get to spend the 4th with my family.

BGA for me if I go, I'll probably be doing the VI corps march.

Very simply, why did the folks riot at woodstock 99??

If the original Gettysburg was the original woodstock than Woodstock 99 is GAC, $$$$$$$$$ is what matters....

As I understand it, the bylaws of the BGA states they will not, cannot support an event where they are not in command.
Thus, the appearance of the June Gburg may not be for the noble cause some project but so they can have their own 150th Gburg.
No doubt there are some great units and great guys going to BGA, but the Cumberland Guard, Black Hats/Iron Brigade, Military Department of Mississippi, 2nd Wisconsin Association and other supporting units are going to GAC.
    BTW, both events have bleachers.

Like all things in this country it's about the money. Two Shiloh's, Two Gettysburg's. Does make one think. History is part of the equation, but not the most important one. When they leave the Lights and Camera, out of the picture that will tell me they have taken a step for History. Why worry about Uniforms being period when you have a Camera crew running around with the Shoulder model. Enjoy either Event both have something you may be looking for. For me with the price of fuel and gunpowder, it's a choice which one I pay a stage fee to. Actor's and Historians all at the same location.

    Default Something to consider

    In response to Colonel Dave,
There are some corporate by-laws that specify that certain activities be under the direction of a corporate officer. Things like insurance coverage, etc. I know that in the USV, to be covered under our insurance we have to attend an activity where a corporate officer is present (in command) or the event is approved by the corporation.

If the Blue/Gray Alliance puts its on cheese on the line (and much personal cash) then it can pick Mickey Mouse to command. Honestly, I didn't mean the pun. GAC can pick whomever they wish to command as well.

The main reason that there have been two events for every major battle is because one commander cannot abide to be under another commander. The guys in the ranks have no idea why they go to one event over the other, but whatever said leader says to them to circle the wagons is convincing enough. The two Shilohs were all about that.
The second reason is event quality. Much of the time this is obvious. In many cases, the guys in the ranks DO know the difference. If their leader convinces them to go to one event for loyalty, solidarity, etc. they will also likely go to the other out of curiosity. This is a dangerous situation for the political leader. Kind of like giving weekend passes for North Koreans to go to Hawaii. Pretty soon they begin to ask questions and defect. If it happens enough, leaders start to lose men. Despite their redoubled efforts to circle the wagons (aka Them vs, Us) Organizations stagnate, decline, and then collapse.

Just a note that we will miss you guys at Brawner Farm and 2nd Manassas this Friday night, as we do the 19th Indiana, 2nd, 7th and 6th Wis on extra-ordinarilly comparable ground.

One would have to consider what they want out of an event, I have seen those that were just out for a weekend with the guys and have a few drinks, march around and shoot the guns..

But then there are those that truly believe that being Historically correct, and try to honor those that were actually there. I would like to see events be a little more forthcoming in what they actually did with the money from the ticket sales, registration.. etc... Did they actually donate any porttion of it to the preservation of our hobby?? or did they just put the money in their pockets? I think that would be a defining point on ones descion on wether to attend and event or not.

Probably the BGA event. June is certainly a better time for me than the July 4th holiday. Certainly not for any "pro-BGA" or "con-GCA" reasons.

MODERATOR NOTE: First and final warning - keep the unit and event politics out of the discussion and stick to facts about which event is better than the other

Read the event websites, see what each event has to offer. Look at how each event would affect your "real life," because of the date the event is being held, travel and etc. Talk to your friends about where the're going and why. Then make a decision for YOURSELF. You're the only person you have to make happy as to what you do in your hobby.
