Buying a saber

I am looking at purchasing a saber i am currently doing a Confederate artillery csptain impression. Does any body have any suggestion on what kind of saber i should buy? People have to me the 1840email light artillery model and others tell me the model 1860 cavalry model. But are there othere swords that would be better for my impression.

Mounted artillery would have Calvary stuff. You might have a federal sword, if you were in the army before the great division.

The standard issue 1840 Light Artillery Saber was generally intended for enlisted issue. Granted also there were officer versions being marketed by private makers that were slightly more ornate. Beyond captures, there were a few southern makers that made their own version of the 1840, at least in some limited numbers. Confederate Artillery also made use of whatever else they could procure, including cavalry type issues. Also plenty of imported foreign and pre-war militia and dragoon styles seen surviving that are contributed. Officers provided/purchased their own normally.. so also lots of standard issue foot officer swords found use with artillery officers just as well... Despite specific design patterns and intended useage, lots of sabers/swords occassionally found service branch cross-over uses..

Thank you that was very helpful. I have been reenacting for 15 years and for the 150'speople was kinda put in an officer role. I just want to make a historic impression and wasnt sure if i should go with the 1840way artillery or another type of saber.

If I recall correctly the 1840 is the heavy cav saber i.e. wristbreaker. The 1860 is the light cav saber

I think the original reference was the 1840 Light Artillery Saber.... there was also a Model 1840 Cavalry Saber.. aka Wrist Breaker... (both patterns were "1840" models)

I would say this is a good bet, not incorrect for CS and correct for US artillery officer's impression, you should shop around but this is a good description. You could also go without as there is well documented lack of swords in the Confederate Army. http://legendaryarms.com/m1arofsab1.html
