PS. I am not arguing that during the period, men may not have rolled up trouser legs, exposing drawers...but in the hobby...look at my *insert vendor here* drawers drives this. I have even seen folks hike their drawers up over their shirt, above their trouser waist so folks could see em. Show me a period pic of that!

Go look at some of the GB dead and close up on the bodies with unbottoned trousers. If memory serves me well there are a few views that you can see drawers with the shirt tucked in.

My thought is, you wouldn't go around showing your underwear now, why would they do it then?

No doubt...any of folks walking around with drawers hanging out above their waistband?

    Cool

What does common sense tell you? Boys of 186x were not short on common sense. Is it possible, this is one of those things that occurred with such regularity, no one bothered to document it?

    Here's what I know:
    -there were drawers
-many men, before the war had never worn or never even heard of drawers
    -there were lined trouser
-there were far more studio "photos" taken of CW soldiers that photos of them in the field.

-if Joe the average Civil War soldier figured out rolling up his drawers with his trousers would keep him cooler, I bet he did it.
-then again, maybe he just cut the legs off at or above the knee instead.

I have trouble believing folks roll up their pants or hike up their drawers to show off their cool gear. Sumptin' just wrong with that.

And, anyone here, ever been in a military camp where the men hung around in their underwear (off duty) when it was hot? Thought so.

True...something wrong...but believe it...heard at least one person admit it.

Well, I do that, but only to keep the drawers from falling down inside my trousers. Still, I always wear a vest, so the drawers are not seen anyway.

Blousing drawers into socks and shirt tails into drawers is the first line of defense against unwelcome and uninvited critters. It may not be cool or kewl, but it is a more effective prevention method than doing nothing.

"While the original battle [Gettysburg] may arguably be considered the epicenter of the history of the war, the GAC reenactment is not the epicenter of the hobby. To confuse or equate the two is unfortunate. - Bernard Biederman, 6 July 2012

"Authenticity conflicts occur when reenactors from one end of the spectrum attend events at the other end of the spectrum then try to impose their own standards instead of event standards."

This is not a soldier but I noticed this Fellers drawers peaking out from under his trousers, dont think it was really intentional though. (the Fellow in the dark suit, beside the one in the fancy checked pants and vest.)

A man who does not know to tuck his shirt into his drawers has never worn proper French cut drawers when travelling. Propriety prevents more details.
