    Default USMC trousers questions.

Were the summer canvas trouser cut in the same pattern as the basic infantry trousers? I have seen sutler version, some are cut like a modern pair of pants, while others have a piercing buckle closure on the back, while other are just like the typical federal trouser. Since I never trust sulters, and I am not sure where to look, does anyone know for a fact, what they did look like?

    Thanks for your time,

    Mr. Swart,

There is a pair of Marine Corps linen trousers in the Union "Echoes of Glory". They follow a pre-war pattern as I recall with two piece legs, as opposed to Federal Arsenal trousers with pieced backs. This is a complex and slightly researched topic. A recent book has been published by Lt. Col. Charles H. Cureton, USMCR (Ret.) and David M. Sullivan titled Civil War Uniforms of the United States Marine Corps: The Regulations of 1859 that does delve deeply into the subject and shows examples of what you are asking about.

If you buy the book here through the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation a portion of the proceeds supports the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, Virginia.
