Possible Documentary on Reenactment

I apologize if this thread is misplaced. I'm a filmmaker and photographer from Pittsburgh, PA with an interest in Civil War history. I've only been to one reenactment but it was enough to pique my interest in shooting a documentary on the subject. I admit that I'm not very familiar with reeanactment in general (how they're organized, etc.), but I'd like to maybe follow a certain company in the preparation for and through a reeanactment. If it matters to anyone, I do shoot only on film (16mm), as opposed to digital and try to find subjects that I believe ought to be preserved on film.

Well, you couldn’t have picked a better time with the sesquicentennial here. There are a number of big events coming up. I suggest you contact Chris Anders (a member of this forum) who operates Rear Rank productions and consider the Maryland My Maryland event in September which will focus on the battles of South Mountain and Antietam. IMHO, that would be a great event to showcase. There are several postings in the Events section of this forum about that event.

Also, please note that the big shoot ‘em ups are fun if done right, but many reenactors also participate in smaller living history events at historic sites, parks and battlefields, as well as in ceremonies, parades, color guards, and commemorations of unique events, like the recent Taps 150 weekend. This aspect of the hobby receives much less attention than the big reenactments and it’s where many of us spend the majority of our time reenacting.

I agree with Quickstep -- Maryland, my Maryland would be an excellent (and quality) event to begin your project with. It would be nice to have the multiple aspects of this hobby documented, instead of just the battle reenacting part, because, as Quickstep mentioned above, it's not all we do -- though it is mostly what people know. If you do go through with the project, and I hope you, good luck! There are many good people who will be more than willing to help you and guide you along.

Also, I applaud you for still shooting with film. There is something in film that digital just cannot capture, and it seems it is becoming a lost art. Keep it up!
