Worth looking into for a trip of this length-Amtrak, whose Palmetto/Silver Service route will take you almost door to door, from St Pete to Washington DC or Baltimore MD. If you no one can pick you up, you can pick up a rental car by getting off at the Station serving the Baltimore airport and take the free shuttle to car rentals. Alternately you can change to a local commuter here and get closer to the site. The same thing can be said for Union Station in DC-rental cars can be picked up there, or local commuter trains.

You arrive having spent less than 24 hours in a nice reclining chair, dozing and looking out the window instead of fighting traffic.

i do have to say, riding a train is relaxing. I once took a train from Toledo to D.C., then to Atlanta. Very relaxing! Besides having to stop every 30 miles it seemed like! I'm sure if someone on here is close to D.C. and would be willing to split gas with you if you went that route. Good luck, Pard!
