    Default Leather gloves for woodburning

I have been using a homemade thickly padded cloth glove for poker art and have caught it on fire a couple of times. It was burned beyond re-using at Resaca. Does anyone know where I could obtain some period style leather gloves, heavy duty enough to resist heat and fire, yet hopefully flexible enough I can still get a grip good enough to “draw with fire”?

Kid leather gloves are fairly easily found in junk shops and antique malls, and you'll want a dark pair. The lengths are often a bit long for period gloves, but you can trim them to the proper length.

Those are only going to provide minimal protection through-- you'll still want a cloth. I'd suggest making one out of layers of 100% wool felt--it will not burn as easily as cotton.

Period work gloves of heavy thick leather are another matter. I can't say that I've seen a pair that would pass for period.

Thank you, Mrs. Lawson. I need to look into getting me some of that kind of wool.
