Default Federal and Confederate Oil Blankets by Claude Sinclair

I am now making a run of Confederate and Federal Oil Blankets. I have had to go up from $50 to $55 due to increase cost such as fabric, linseed oil, pigment, etc. Both are correctly made. Presently I am working on 4 Federals and 2 Confederates but can make more depending upon orders. Total labor for each one is about 3 hours and material cost is $20-$25 for each one. I have sold over 300 of these. I take Pay Pal at clsinlair (at) comporium.net or even checks, cash, or money orders. You can view my work at:

I get very good reviews from buyers.

Also, on this run I will donate $5 for each one sold to the CWREENACTORS board to offset some of the cost involved for the upkeep of this site.

Can these be used as a poncho as well or are there no neck holes.

No neck holes but there are two edged grommets so it can be used as a shawl. I used one at McDowell and it is my opinion that it is better than a poncho. But that is my opinion.

Shawl works waaayyy better than a neck hole. Love mine...one of my favorite peices of my kit.

PS. I tie mine with a peice of hemp. It stays in one of the holes, knotted on either side.

Without a doubt that will work. Like Claude, I think they are even better. You can utilize the patent button hooks such as available from NJ Sekela, knapsack J hooks, string, etc through the grommets on a long side, place around the neck and voila. Many Federal India rubber blankets had specially spaced grommets on one side for just that purpose, but Claude's will work in a similiar manner to good affect

I got my confederate oil blanket from Claude on the first day at McDowell and put it to good use soon thereafter. It was well worth the price.

I purchased one of Claude's Federal models, and it has lasted me through The Eastern Flank, Marmadukes' Raid, 145th Atlanta, Bummers, Backwaters, Occupation of New Madrid, 150th Shiloh, and countless mainstream events in between. It has never let me down, nor has it let me get soaking wet. I highly recommend one of these to anybody wanting a quality piece of kit.
