Officer's Cloathing
I am sure at some point we have seen the Horse Soldiers with John Wayne and William Holden. When they are at the Plantation, William Holden is wearing what appears to be a white sack coat with officer's straps on it. Was this a common practice for officer's especially medical or was it Hollywood? I know that officer's could wear civilian stle waistcoats under their coats as they were not an issued item.

I have read a number of accounts of surgeons mentioning having or using non-descript alternate coats sometimes when making hospital rounds etc, but nothing that Ive ever found mentioned that they bore any rank insignias and seriously doubt they were anything like what was shown in the movie. Majority of all uniforms and items used in the Horse Soldier (1959) were of hollywoodized Indian war era garb.... Studio wardrobe departments had tons and tons of that stuff stock piled and available from all the endless array of Western movies made during that era...

If memory serves correctly you will find a few Trap-Door carbines being used in a couple scenesEspecially the Horse Soldier, pretty sure they even used bolt action rifles in that one.

The Horse Soldiers is one of my favorites ever since I saw it at the movies. I've never seen a bolt-action, maybe a trapdoor or two, but it came out in 1959. Any idea what CW reenactors looked like back then? Remember any of the Centennial celebrations? Pretty bad looking and everything from original rifles to M1s. We've come a long way since, although some events may not give that impression. I guess one has to overlook some of the costumery and arms and find the spirit of the movie. It's the modern films that don't get it right that irritate me.Especially the Horse Soldier, pretty sure they even used bolt action rifles in that one.

I have seen period images of white linen vests, but I do not recall seeing any coats like the ones you mention.
