I wear a slouch whenever it rains to keep the rain from running down my neck and during the summer months I wear a slouch whenever outside doing yard work and such to give a little shade . I wet the interior to keep cool . I use a wool covered federal canteen at work doing construction or when out taking a ride on my quad . When on the quad I also bring along a haversack with my canteen filled with snacks and other necessities . I wet the cover on the canteen every so often to evaporate any heat and to keep the water cool .

The last time I was stationed in Korea, a fellow reenactor wore his Union sack coat everywhere. I recognized it at once, but most people ask where he got that style "P Coat".

That's "pea" coat! I've worn my greatcoat while snowblowing. The coat is great for it but it took days of hanging in the garage to get the gasoline smell out of the wool.

Canteen goes for walks. Greatcoat worn in cold weather, as do the socks.
On occasion, the skillets get pulled out for cooking.

I wear a Bender hat while working in the garden, and use a Federal fatigue blouse for yard work in the cooler months. I also own a pair of Robert Land's "Workman's boots" that see casual use daily, and look sharp with a pair of jeans.

    Hallo!

Once Upon a Time, and in stages of my evolution in the Hobby....

I wore my uniforms to and from events. Or when visiting CW battlefields.
After two or three years, that was down to a jacket and hat over modern clothes.
After two or three years, that was just a hat or cap.
After two or three more years, it was nothing Period.

I used to wear my greatcoat and mechanic's hat shovelling snow. But as Herr Rob shared.... when I switched over to a snow thrower, the exhaust smell stayed in the wool drowning out the woodsmoke.

My brothers-in-law hunt muzzleloading deer season with CW rifle-muskets and rifles.

Not a real Civil War reenactor, I only portray one on boards and fora.
I do not portray a Civil War soldier, I merely interpret one.

I use my period spects, and case everyday. My federal wheel hat also. Overcoat in the Winter. Sack coat in cool weather. My civilian shoes all the time.

I don't think it is a "look at me..." question, just an honest attempt to point out practical uses of ACW gear.

Curt: You scared me. The first time I read that last sentence, I thought it said "Nothing. period." not "Nothing period." Almost had to go wash my brain :P
