It's a different application, but I would think that the results would be similar.
My wife has one of those carved tree limb bears that lives outside. I don't know what wood it is, but she was told to douse it with linseed oil several times a year to protect the wood and keep it from drying/splitting. I would wipe it down spring and fall, and no splitting occured for the first several years - it only occurred after I forgot...

Another common old timers recipe is for the first application on bare wood is to use a mix of boiled linseed oil and turpentine... this tends to absorb deeper into the wood fibers.. after thats good and dry apply just boiled linseed oil thereafter.... apply a good coat.... allow it to soak in a couple hours or better overnight... wipe off any surface excess... allow to dry a couple days...
