BGA 150th Shiloh

I am afraid the Mayor was too busy looking at the imposing sky to attend to any Confederates coming thorugh Purdy. Or I was looking for our tornado ditch. Or maybe I had a moment of softheartedness.

And to anyone in on the fiery Friday night "lynching" party - my hat is once again off to each and every one of you. It was indeed an impressive display and scenario. Thanks so much for the memory.

I found one in a ditch that I intend to deconstruct, still, I imagine the 'secret sauce' must have contained rosin and not just simple lamp oil.

Not that I ever saw, but then I wasn't on sutler row after Thursday, except to find that nice Mr Burton and get an ice run made to the Town of Purdy.

Back in '97, I went to my first reenactment as a participant in 135th Shiloh, or Mudloh as it was sometimes called. I believe it at the site of this year's BGA Shiloh. The mud would almost suck off your brogans. Our breakfast fire floated past our tent. We marched about a mile in the rain. The event was cancelled due to the rain and flooding (4" of rain in 3 hours). I came home tired, hungry, wet and muddy. I loved it. It's good to know that site hasn't changed in 15 years.

I was at the AoT event. I put away the rank and had a **** of a time playing a private and working the gun. There may have been more people at the other site, but I guarantee we all had the same amount of fun with our pards and frustration with the weather. But then again, it was the same weather they had 150 years ago…

We were camped almost to the far eastern side of the encampment and saw all kinds of dark clouds with heavy lightening over your way. Did you have high winds as well? Would be my kind of luck to have the wind blow down my tent and get soaked. I arrived Friday in the evening and just threw down on the ground and slept campaign style throughout the weekend without any rain (thank goodness).

Really glad to hear you had a good time. Our hearts were with all of you over at the other event...wishing the best for all. Wouldn't it be great if we could all be together for Chickamauga's 150th?

The reenactment grounds were truly awesome! The main battle site was as beautiful a site for a reenactment as I've ever seen. Not a single modern intrusion. The battle reenactments themselves were awesome (got stuck in reserve Saturday morning so our battalion didn't do as much). The awesome sight and sounds of the cannon were amazing and the loudness of that battle was truly humbling. I agree with RJ, it was the best cannonade I've heard. The battle scenarios seemed to have went well, too. Long battles, distances kept far apart, etc. 15th Iowa looked great and so did the camp full of Sibleys!

Logistics in King's camp were bad. There were not enough port-a-johns for the numbers, let alone not getting cleaned, ostensibly because of mud. Not having tp is an annoyance, which is why I had raided old MRE packets prior to coming. But not having water is inexcusable. It is life-threatening. The water buffaloes were not large enough, or there were not enough of them, for the numbers in King's camp. And if the dang artillery can haul their pieces back and forth and take their crews to ride to the battle grounds (really, folks can't walk?), then vehicles can get in to refill the water. I sincerely hope that the organizers will plan for better logistics. It's not like it's a mystery of how much water or sanitary facilities there should be. I could call my battalion logistics officer who would be able to tell me within undoubtedly a few minutes what the ratios are. There was NO water Saturday night at Kings and people were so disgusted they were ready to leave en masse Sunday morning if the situation didn't change.

If someone had died or gotten seriously injured for lack of water, then all the signed paperwork in the world wouldn't have been able to protect the organizers from losing their shirts to a decent lawyer. And that would have made it a double tragedy.

Well, it's good to see what really happened. As Navy, we were frequently interrogated by visitors as to why the Hunley was MIA. They had to make due with our humble Navy display.

I had a great time. Logisitical issues can be overlooked. As one who has helped put on events in the past, weather can throw you a curveball and make things difficult to work out, no matter how much you have planned and prep for. The WFB did a fantastic job out on the field. We were put to some test and passed each time. I thought Sunday's battle where our battalion and the WIG's battalion next to us did the left wheel advance to push the rebs back looked awesome. If I heard right, the two battalions combined had four hundred plus men making that sweep! If true, I would love to had seen it from the other side.

This was really the only negative I had for the event besides lack of water. Truck after truck coming through with men in the back going to service their piece. Walk next time.
