    Default Living History Event - 150th Glendale and Malvern Hill - June 29 - July 1, 2012

    Hi Folks,

My unit (Co. C of the Federal Army) has been asked to raise a 50 man Union contingent to support the 150th Anniversary events at the Glendale and Malvern Hill units of Richmond National Battlefield Park. This event takes place on the actual anniversary of these battles. We have been asked to portray George McCall's Pennsylvania Reserves at Glendale, and the 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry at Malvern Hill.

As part of the program, we will be retracing the steps taken by the Army of the Potomac during the retreat from Glendale to Malvern Hill (about a two mile march on original roads). This has already been approved by the NPS, and we will be followed at a distance by the CS contingent during this special part of the program.

This is a 150th Anniversary NPS event, not a reenactment, so all participants will need to follow NPS rules and regulations. There will also be a high level impression guideline document generated in advance so that all Union men are on the same page in terms of uniforms, weapons and equipment for this one.

Finally, I recognize that there are a lot of worthy competing venues during the month of June this year, but with the recent acquisition of battlefield land at Glendale, the Park would like to have a good turnout of volunteers at this event.

If you, or your mess, or even your 25 man company are interested in participating in this event, please contact me by email at spannier@hotmail.com . Co C. will be glad to work with any individuals or units that want to share in this unique experience.

    Thank you for your consideration,

    Steve Pannier

For those who may not realize it, Malvern Hill is considered one of, if not THE, most pristine battlefields left in America. Sounds like its going to be one of the more memorable NPS events of the year in the Eastern Theater.

Steve, do you know if Route 156, the main drag from Glendale to Malvern Hill is still closed to vehicular traffic like it was last year? If that's the route being taken, then it will be mostly downhill and traffic free.

Default Glendale to Malvern Hill March

    Hi Bitter,

Thanks for the good words about the event. I am not sure about the status of VA SR 156 being closed at this time (as I am in MD), but the Rangers at Richmond National Battlefield Park asked us if we could "do them a favor" and participate in a march from Glendale battlefield (followed closely behind by our Confederate counterparts) late Saturday (after programs at Glendale) to the Malvern Hill site and be ready for Malvern Hill demonstrations on Sunday. The NPS has already worked out traffic control logistics with their own law enforcement rangers, and they have permission from the local law enforcement to conduct this march.

Sounds like either way, vehicular traffic won't be an issue during the march.

    Thanks,

    Steve

I live a few miles from Malvern Hill and SR 156 (Willis Church Road) is now open to traffic after having been closed for repairs for about three years. Malvern Hill is so pristine, that traveling from Glendale to Malvern Hill on 156 truly takes you back in time.

The combined protected areas of Glendale and Malvern Hill cover a large area and without question form the best protected battlefield in Central Virginia. What some people do not know is that there are actually three battlefields in that one area. Slightly northwest of Malvern Hill is a portion of the First Deep Bottom (1864) battlefield, 200+ acres of which have been preserved by the Civil War Trust. Together, the preserved area of the three battlefields is about 2,000 acres.

Anticipation is building for the 150th anniversary of the Seven Days Battles. People who typically are not interested in battlefields are talking about attending the events this year at Gaines' Mill, Glendale, and Malvern Hill. It should be great!

Nice to see someone else is carrying on the tradition the CR's & SWB started at these two battlefields.

As a former CR, I truly appreciate the contribution that they and other PL member units made in the areas of authenticity and in sponsoring really great events.

    Best,

Event Update - I am pleased to report that a great living history group has agreed to form a second Union company for this event. I think that there is still room for individuals and small messes that want to attend. Drop me a note at spannier@hotmail.com if you are interested.

    Take care,
