North Anna State Park is an overlooked treasure. It's only a few miles off your route between Fredericksburg and Richmond. It has a nice walk in the woods with well preserved works, good reader boards and not many people.

"While the original battle [Gettysburg] may arguably be considered the epicenter of the history of the war, the GAC reenactment is not the epicenter of the hobby. To confuse or equate the two is unfortunate. - Bernard Biederman, 6 July 2012
"Authenticity conflicts occur when reenactors from one end of the spectrum attend events at the other end of the spectrum then try to impose their own standards instead of event standards."
This is not a battlefield, but a museum worth visiting: http://whiteoakmuseum.com/. Privately run by a guy who took all of the stuff he collected in the region from the Union Army winter quarters and created his own museum. He focuses on the Union winter camps with four rebuilt structures in the back property.
Only takes about 10 minutes off of I-95.
We will be doing a Union hospital living history on May 4th - 6th.

Lots of good info here. Thanks. I've got a weekend's worth of research now![]()
Has anyone been to the Museum of The Confederacy in Richmond? My wife wanted to hit that one. Is it worth a stop?
Yes the Museum of the The Confederacy in Richmond is worth a stop especially if you're interested in the eastern campaigns of the war. Also check out the American Civil War Center at the site of the Tredegar Iron Works as well if you have the time. If you're in Williamsburg on a Friday there is a good Civil War walking tour through the historic area on Friday evenings.

If you get over to Newport News at any point, be sure to see the Mariners' Museum:

Matter of fact, this weekend is the Battle of Hampton Roads special event!
Oh...I just realized the Monitor is now viewable on their webcams. There are several views.
Great advice so far! I'll also recommend Cold Harbor as a visit worthy destination. I'd suggest a visit to Yorktown Battlefield. In Newport News is the National Maritime Museum, with the Monitor recovered items as well as a full scale replica. In the museum are loads of Naval related artifacts. Anyone who hasn't visited this museum needs to see it!

Let me recommend that Colonial Williamsburg is recognizing the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Williamsburg (1st major battle of the Peninsula Campaign) and the subsequent 3 year Federal occupation of the town.
Beginning in April there are evening programs such as "Women of Civil War Williamsburg" (Sundays), UnCivil Harmony: Music of Civil War Williamsburg (Wednesdays) and the Civil War Walking Tour of the town (Fridays).
Additionally there is planned a 150th anniversary Commemoration Weekend on May 5 and 6, with a commemoration ceremony, living history and a field hospital in the original courthouse building that was used as a hospital after the battle. (We have identified at least 32 public buildings and residences in town that were used as hospitals the day after the battle.)
If you're anywhere near us, come and see another side of the old colonial capital.

thanks for the info. We're heading out there tonight. We'll be spending 3 days in the Williamsburg area. Then we'll head up to DC. Along the way we're going to stay in the Richmond area and then up 95 and see what can be seen.
Should be a good week.
You MUST see the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Look for it on 95 north of Fredericksburg. It is in Quantico.

Do the 7 Days and end up at Harrison's Landing. The wife will like the plantation tour.
